Tanning

Tan aftercare that actually works

Fading is inevitable. Patchy fading is not.

The first shower

Wait until the recommended development time has fully passed. The first rinse should be short, lukewarm rather than hot, and without soap or a scrub. Water will run coloured — that is the cosmetic guide colour, not your tan.

Moisturise, properly

This is the single biggest factor in how a tan fades. Hydrated skin sheds slowly and evenly. Dry skin sheds in flakes and patches. Twice daily with a fragrance-free, oil-free moisturiser is the standard advice, morning and night.

What shortens a tan

Long hot baths, saunas and steam rooms. Chlorinated pools and salt water. Exfoliating scrubs, acids and retinoids on the tanned skin. Vigorous towel drying — pat, do not rub. Anything that accelerates cell turnover accelerates fading.

Extending it

A gradual tan lotion every two or three days tops up colour as it fades and smooths the transition. Start on day three rather than waiting until the tan is patchy.

Removing it

To take a tan off cleanly, exfoliate thoroughly and use a dedicated tan remover rather than scrubbing hard, which produces streaks. A long bath to soften the skin first makes the whole job easier.
